How you Create Environmentally Friendly Paper
Designing Our Own Paper Tree
Sustainable paper takes more than just planting new trees. Being eco-friendly is the number one priority at Double A. We make sure that we foster sustainability from the tree we harvest, where the trees are planted, to recycling waste and rainwater. Our paper supports the earth, our farmers, and our communities.
For over 25 years, we’ve tested more than 2,500 specimens to discover the tree strain that’s most suited to Thailand’s tropical climate and also produces the highest quality wood pulp. The result? Our patented Double A Paper-Tree, which yield a large quantity of mature trees every 3-5 years and require little maintenance. But the real magic comes from where we plant them…
The KHAN-NA Secret: A Revolutionary Approach to Land
Almost 50% of Thailand’s space is devoted to agriculture. Yet farmers maintain unused land between the rice paddies for walking the field, known as KHAN-NA. We rent this land and plant trees there, supporting 1.5 million Thai farmers along the way. This gives farmers additional income and precious shade for walking between the hot fields. The trees help with climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen. In this way, we protect the world’s existing natural forests, too.
Generating Energy: No Waste is Wasted
We convert all waste (wood bark, knotted wood, chips, lignin and sludge) from the pulping process into renewable biomass fuel. This ensures a self-sufficient manufacturing process which produces electricity for the local power plant, which in turn fuels the mill and supplies energy to support 400,000 people.
Conserving Water: Train the Rain
Our 35 million cubic meter reservoir, Emerald Lake, collects rainfall and conserves water during rainy seasons. This water fuels our mills and trees as well as local communities and factories. Additionally, we squeeze excess water out of the paper pulp during the manufacturing process to be recycled. We also use a special dry process for making wood chips, and we leverage technology to minimize water consumption.
Social Sustainability
We’re dedicated to bettering the lives of people in the communities who share their home with us. Farmers use their KHAN-NA ,otherwise unused land, to cultivate trees; this provides shade, absorbs CO2, generates O2, and is a reliable source of additional income. The electricity we generate in our plant powers local villages, and our rainwater reservoir provides water.
Double A also spearheads school funding programs wherein trees are planted in vacant spaces around schools; Double A purchases these trees when they mature, and schools use these funds for educational materials and classroom improvements. Our goal is to better the communities we serve, both in Thailand and throughout the world.
Economic Sustainability
We continually work to exceed the expectations of our key shareholders, government institutions, non-profits, NGOs, banks and financial institutions, trading partners, employees, customers and the community.
From a financial standpoint, the increased incomes for farmers, funds for schools and local and global employment opportunities all contribute to our goals for economic growth and sustainability.
